Odoo Licensing Consultancy

Odoo's full open source software suite is growing fast, and as more businesses shift to Odoo for their core operations, the importance of understanding Odoo licensing grows with it. Licensing rules are not one-size-fits-all; they vary between the Community and Enterprise versions, and differ across free and paid apps. Without the right guidance, these distinctions can lead to costly mistakes or unexpected legal exposure. Our Odoo licensing consultancy connects you with partners who have precise, up-to-date knowledge of these rules and regulations. We help you make the right licensing decisions from the start, keeping your business fully compliant, cost-efficient, and protected from any future legal issues.

License Types

Odoo Licensing

Odoo licensing isn't one-size-fits-all. Each license type has its own terms and conditions,
and the right one depends entirely on how your business plans to use the software.

Community

Odoo Community License

Odoo Community is governed by GNU LGPLv3 - derived from GPL and maintained by the Free Software Foundation. It allows you to use, modify, and distribute the software provided source code is shared under the same license. Notably, newly developed modules by the licensee can be distributed in closed-source form or under any other license of your choosing.

Enterprise

Odoo Enterprise License

Odoo Enterprise operates under OPL v1.0, which prohibits executing or modifying the edition without a valid, active subscription. Subscriptions are strictly user-based - exceeding the licensed count is a violation. Only certified Odoo partners may work on the source code outside production. Distributing, selling, or sublicensing Enterprise is not permitted under any circumstances.

Free Apps

Odoo Free App License

New free apps can be built and deployed across both Enterprise and Community versions. Enterprise allows the use of free apps from the Odoo App Store at no cost under any license. Since Community runs under LGPL, free apps can also be published under any license - however, core Community addons must remain under LGPLv3 without exception.

Paid Apps

Odoo Paid App License

Paid addons require purchase or a written agreement from the author for lawful use. Like Enterprise, selling, distributing, modifying, or sublicensing them is prohibited. However, you may use them as a library - building new modules and importing features without copying the addon directly - and distribute your resulting work under any compatible license such as LGPL or MIT.

When You Need Odoo Licensing Consultancy

From first setup to ongoing renewals, here's exactly when our licensing expertise matters most.

Starting or Switching Odoo Editions

Moving from Community to Enterprise or setting up Odoo for the first time, the licensing terms set at this stage reach further than most teams expect, covering every module, customization, and deployment that follows.

Building or Distributing Custom Modules

When you build a custom module, it inherits license terms from the components it is built on. Selling or delivering that module to a client without checking those terms first is a risk most developers overlook.

Renewing Your Odoo Subscription

Most businesses renew without ever checking if their user count, active modules, and custom code still match what the license actually covers. That gap compounds quietly. Renewal is when to address it.

Running Odoo Across Multiple Companies

One subscription does not automatically cover multiple legal entities. Multi-company and multi-database setups often carry separate licensing requirements, and those requirements rarely receive a review.

Reselling or Hosting Odoo for Clients

Providing Odoo as a service or selling Odoo-based products puts you under a different set of licensing rules than a standard subscriber. This specific area is where the majority of licensing violations happen.

Purchasing Apps From the Odoo App Store

OPL-1 apps carry permanent restrictions covering modification, redistribution, and resale. If you are deploying a paid app for a client or building on top of it, you need to know exactly what is allowed.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about Odoo licensing? We've got answers.

What are the different types of Odoo licenses? +
Odoo has three main license types. Community Edition is free and open source under LGPLv3, covering the core modules. Enterprise Edition is a paid subscription that unlocks advanced modules, hosting options, and upgrades priced per internal user per month. Odoo Proprietary License (OPL) applies to paid third-party modules sold on the Odoo App Store by independent developers. Older Odoo versions (before v9) also used AGPL, which still applies to many community-built modules available today.
What is Odoo Community Edition and is it really free? +
Odoo Community is free under the LGPLv3 license. You can download, use, and modify it at no cost. However, it excludes Odoo's advanced modules like accounting, payroll, eCommerce, and marketing automation which are only available in the Enterprise edition.
What is the Odoo Enterprise License Agreement? +
The Odoo Enterprise License Agreement is the legal document that governs the terms of use for Odoo Enterprise. It defines what you can and cannot do with the Enterprise source code, restricts redistribution, and outlines Odoo S.A.'s obligations regarding updates and support. All Enterprise subscribers are bound by it.
What is included in Odoo Enterprise License? +
The Odoo Enterprise License covers all proprietary modules built by Odoo S.A., access to Odoo.sh (cloud hosting), bug fixes, security patches, and upgrades to new versions. It is priced per user per month and requires a valid subscription to remain active.
What happens if I stop paying for Odoo Enterprise? +
If your Odoo Enterprise subscription expires, the Enterprise modules stop working. Your data remains intact, but your instance essentially reverts to Community functionality. You won't receive security updates or be able to use paid modules until the subscription is renewed.
Is there a lifetime Odoo Enterprise license available? +
Odoo Enterprise is strictly subscription-based monthly or annual. There is no one-time perpetual license option. Your access to Enterprise features depends on an active subscription at all times.
